History of The Department

Dairy development program has its own glorious history in the field of cooperative. For the first time in the history of cooperative, it was in 1917 when Katra Cooperative Milk Society, Allahabad came into existence. This was not only the firs cooperative society in the state but it was the first occasion in the country when a cooperative society was organized in the field of dairy but in next two decade there was no remarkable progress in this direction. In 1938, the first milk union of the country was established in the name of Lucknow Milk Producers Cooperative Union Limited, Lucknow, capital of Uttar Pradesh.
In 1962, Pradeshik Cooperative Dairy Federation Limited was organized as technical consultant organization with the objective to give pace to dairy development program in the state. In 1971, Operation Flood-I scheme was launched in 8 district of the state for which this organized has been nominated as Implementing agency. As the scheme was limited to only 8 district of the state, it had no visible impact. As a result, the government focused its attention on expansion of dairy development,
Dairy Development, passed Uttar Pradesh Milk Act in 1976, established separate Dairy Development in the state and created a post of Milk Commissioner. The power of Registrar under Cooperative Acts and Rules under it was delegated to Milk Commissioner and he was appointed Head of the Department and Secretary, UP State Milk Board. At present, Uttar Pradesh is the largest milk producer state of the country.
